ALLISTON – November 10, 2015 - As Stevenson Memorial Hospital continues its redevelopment plan to improve its technology and the services it provides to the local community, it continues to attract highly-sought physicians to its ranks.  One of the latest physicians to join Stevenson's ranks is Dr. J. Scheeres.  Dr. Scheeres will be joining Stevenson in January of 2016.

Dr. Scheeres, an OBGYN from Royal Victoria Hospital, has over 25 years of experience.  He had a successful family practice in South Africa, his birthplace, in 1994.  He came to Canada in 1995 and established a busy family practice in Manitoba that served a large obstetrical patient population.  He completed 5 years of residency at the University of Manitoba.  This is where he developed an interest in Maternal-Fetal medicine.  He then spent another year in practice at the University of Manitoba.

In 2002, Dr. Scheeres was awarded the best resident research paper in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of Manitoba and was recognized nationally by the Canadian Foundation for Women's Health.  His research has been published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, with that research still used today by Motherisk as one of the references for Fetal Solvent Syndrome.  For 11 years, he has been a well-known and sought-after obstetrician at Royal Victoria Hospital.  He has memberships in the following Societies:

- SOGC (Society of Obstetrics & Gynecologists of Canada)

- SCC (Society of Colposcopists of Canada)

- RCPSC (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada)

“I am very excited to announce the addition of Dr. Scheeres to our medical staff at Stevenson in our efforts to provide exceptional talent and continue improving the quality of care we provide to our patients, says Dr. Jody Levac, President and CEO.  “As we continue with our redevelopment plan to revitalize Stevenson, build the best facility possible, and make it a hospital capable of fulfilling our community's needs for decades to come, we are also focused on bringing in the most capable physicians and staff so that our transformation is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s delivering the absolute best for our patients and their families.”

This is what is attracting many of the most highly-sought after physicians in the Central Ontario region and beyond to join our efforts to build the best facility we can, one that is capable of meeting and even exceeding the standards we have achieved in the past.  Our physicians and staff have enabled us to provide some of the best care and turnaround times in the region, including the 2nd-fastest emergency department out of 74 medium- and high-volume hospitals in the entire province of Ontario.  We know that Stevenson will not be able to continue providing such high-quality care and more without upgraded facilities and the latest technologies, which is what our redevelopment plan will achieve.

The continuing redevelopment plan and the highly-sought medical personnel it is helping to bring to Stevenson is making this a very exciting time for our medical staff and for our community.  Dr. Scheeres is another esteemed physician who will help to ensure that Stevenson provides the best care possible for our community well into the future.

Says Alan Dresser, Chairman of SMH’s Board of Directors “I look forward to Dr. Scheeres’ contributions as a leading OBGYN and his engagement in continuing the excellent patient care provided in the maternal newborn programme.  I am confident that the skill and reputation of Dr. Scheeres will make Stevenson an even more attractive option for expectant mothers in our area and ensure the continued success of this programme as we push forward on our journey towards redevelopment.”

We welcome Dr. J. Scheeres to the Stevenson family and community!
