About Us

Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) is located in the community of Alliston, in the Town of New Tecumseth, Ontario. Situated one hour north of downtown Toronto, this fully accredited hospital offers 38 inpatient beds and a wide range of outpatient services. Stevenson serves a catchment area that includes Adjala-Tosorontio, Canadian Forces Base Borden, Essa, Innisfil, and New Tecumseth.

Stevenson dates back to 1928, when donations from T.P. Loblaw, of the famed Loblaws grocery chain, conceived the idea of a hospital as a tribute to his grandparents, William and Elizabeth Stevenson.

A lot has changed since then. Today the hospital is in a period of growth and opportunity. Stevenson is embarking on a redevelopment plan that would see the facility expand to over twice its current size. Our Emergency Department was built in 1964 to serve 7,000 patients in a year and we now serve almost 35,000 patients annually.

Learn more about the history of SMH

Here are some of our recent achievements:

  • High-tech ultrasound units, donated to the hospital in 2006, were the first of their kind in the region.
  • The hospital's first CT scanner was purchased and began testing patients in 2009.
  • Stevenson in partnership with Southlake Health and Oak Valley Health implemented an electronic medical record system – Meditech, in 2018. The partnership referred to as SHINE (Shared Health Integrated Network Exchange) includes a shared system approach, allowing a patient's health record to follow them between the hospital systems for ease of access. Overall, the technology and partnership transform how we deliver patient care, giving medical professionals improved access to patient medical data in real time and supporting faster diagnosis and treatment.
  • As a second phase of electronic medical system implementation, Patient Connect was launched in 2019. Patient Connect is an online tool that gives patients and families 24/7 access to their healthcare information. Patients can view Lab test results, Diagnostic Imaging reports, upcoming appointments and more. Visit the Patient Connect page for more information.
  • In July 2020, SMH received approval from the Ministry of Health on their Stage 1 submission for a redeveloped hospital. In March 2022, SMH received its Stage 2 approval and approval to move to Stage 3.
  • In 2022, Stevenson Memorial Hospital was awarded Exemplary Standing status by Accreditation Canada after completing its Accreditation review.
  • In November 2023, SMH announced a new program in partnership with Bayshore HealthCare called Stevenson@Home. The program allows eligible patients to receive care at home once discharged from the hospital.
  • The initial phase of our redevelopment project began in January 2025, focusing on preparing the property for the construction of an expanded facility, with construction expected to commence in late 2025. The province is investing nearly $14.5 million in this critical site preparation phase as part of the hospital’s overall redevelopment effort.

Our goal as a community hospital is to provide quality patient care that meets the needs of our growing community. We are developing a strong vision for the future of Stevenson Memorial Hospital, centred on a revitalized hospital, cutting-edge equipment, and comfortable, modern space for patients and families to receive health care close to home.
