Parking and Transportation

*Patients and visitors will notice some construction activity on our property that is taking place to complete some site improvements. All activity is taking place external from the hospital building and programs and services are running as normal.

There will be an increased volume of trucks coming out of our main entrance parking lot. Personnel will be on hand to direct the trucks so that ambulances and other traffic can proceed safely.

Parking may be impacted and we apologize for the inconvenience. Overflow parking is available along Fletcher Crescent just past the hospital. Families may want to plan to drop patients with mobility limitations off at the main entrance before proceeding to the park.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Parking Fees at SMH

The parking fee at Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) is $10 per day. Parking fees are one of the hospital's main sources of revenue, which are used to maintain parking facilities (such as snow removal, de-icing, and security services) and to support critical needs and essential care at SMH.

In 2016, the government passed mandatory regulations to ensure hospital parking is affordable for patients and visitors. Stevenson continues to follow these policies, and even with the increase from $7 to $10 in 2018, we still have one of the lowest parking fees among hospitals in the region.

Parking Options

Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the emergency entrance off of Fletcher Street. Automated parking meters are installed conveniently throughout the lot, and payment can be made by credit card or cash. Change meters are located on the left side of the Emergency entrance.

  • Daily Pass -  $10
  • Weekly Pass -  $32
  • Monthly Pass -  $66

Free street parking (with a 2-hour limit) is available on Fletcher Street across from Riverdale Park. Patients are also encouraged to use the drop-off area in front of the Emergency entrance if they are arriving by taxi, Uber, or any other transportation service.

Please park only in designated areas and be aware of Heliport restrictions. Vehicles parked in spots indicated with a green "H" must be able to move their vehicles quickly when announced in the case that a helicopter is arriving to airlift patients.

Frequently Asked Questions about Transportation to/from SMH:

What is Non-Urgent Transportation?

When the need for this travel is not related to the care being provided to the patient by the hospital, it is considered to be “non-urgent” transportation:

  • If a patient has an appointment that does not correspond to their hospital care i.e. eye doctor, dentist, etc.
  • For patients requiring stretcher or wheelchair transport that the family cannot accommodate.
  • For discharge to a private home, long-term care, or retirement home.
  • For patients with extended benefits, the transfer cost may be covered by their insurance company.

When will Stevenson Memorial Hospital Pay for Transportation Costs?

The hospital will pay for transportation (private patient transfer) when an appointment is related to ongoing inpatient medical care (i.e. a specialist consultation at another hospital). If the patient is stable and not confined to bed, family or a substitute decision-maker are encouraged to drive the patient.

When Can I Use an Ambulance?

An ambulance is used for emergency, life-threatening, and urgent situations or when paramedic care is medically necessary as determined by the hospital. Patients with a valid Ontario Health Insurance Provider (OHIP) Card must pay $45 for land ambulance or $240 for air ambulance.
