Redevelopment Project

Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) is thrilled to announce the beginning of an exciting redevelopment project that will transform our hospital into a modern, state-of-the-art healthcare facility. Originally built in 1964, the current infrastructure was designed to support 7,000 Emergency Department visits per year. Today, we manage nearly 35,000 visits annually, and the growing demands of our community and catchment area make it clear that redevelopment is essential to meet healthcare needs both now and for future generations.

This expansion will ensure Stevenson Memorial Hospital remains a cornerstone of healthcare for our community, providing the services and care needed to support a growing population.

Redevelopment Plan

Please explore the latest renderings of our future hospital.

The new expansion will wrap around the hospital’s current facility, tripling the size of the hospital and will revitalize many clinical areas. Inpatient bed capacity will increase by 20 percent. The Emergency Department will triple in size and have its separate entrance with enclosed Ambulance Bays. Laboratory space will be enhanced, including surgical suites, inpatient rooms, diagnostic imaging, birthing suites and more. The design features significant use of natural light, modern features, enhanced parking and new, refreshed gardens and green space. A new, elevated helipad will also be a part of the project.

The Redevelopment Plan

The Stevenson Memorial Hospital project includes a wrap-around expansion to its current facility, significantly increasing both space and functionality. A number of critical clinical areas will be expanded and enhanced as part of the redevelopment, including:
  • Emergency Department: The Emergency Department will triple in size and include a separate entrance, as well as enclosed Ambulance Bays.
  • Laboratory: Expanded laboratory space to meet the needs of a growing patient population.
  • Medical/Surgical (Inpatient Unit): Increased inpatient bed capacity (20% more beds) and 100% single occupancy rooms.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Expanded diagnostic imaging space, including the addition of an MRI suite for advanced imaging.
  • Surgical Suite: Three new, state-of-the-art operating rooms to provide timely surgical services.
  • Obstetrics (Birthing Unit): Third floor of new facility is dedicated to the Obstetrics Unit. Will feature bright, new patient rooms with family-friendly spaces.
  • Pharmacy: Expanded pharmacy space to support patient care.
  • Medical Device Reprocessing: Enhanced space for reprocessing of medical devices for safe and efficient patient care.
  • Environmental Services: Increased space for environmental services to support hospital operations.
  • Materials Management: Expanded space to improve materials management and hospital logistics.

The design of the new facility will make significant use of natural light and modern features. In addition to clinical upgrades, the hospital grounds will be refreshed with new gardens, green spaces, and enhanced parking to provide a welcoming environment for patients and visitors. A new, elevated helipad will be added to improve critical care transport.

An early works project is underway to prepare the site for new construction, ensuring that the project proceeds smoothly and efficiently.

MRI Suite Coming to SMH

We are pleased to announce that the redevelopment project will include an MRI suite within the Diagnostic Imaging Department. This addition will allow patients to receive advanced imaging services closer to home, eliminating the need to travel outside the area for these important diagnostic procedures. The new MRI suite will play a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring diseases and injuries, offering detailed images of organs, bones, muscles, blood vessels, and other soft tissues to support treatment planning.
Construction for the MRI suite is scheduled to begin in late 2025, ensuring our community has access to this critical service right here at Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

Companies Prequalified for Phase 1 of the Redevelopment

Stevenson Memorial Hospital, in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario (IO), has prequalified three companies to deliver Phase 1 of the redevelopment project. These companies were selected through a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process based on their construction experience and financial capacity to handle a project of this scale.
The prequalified companies are:
  • EllisDon Corporation
  • Ledcor Construction Limited
  • Pomerleau Inc.
A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be issued to these companies in Spring 2025. After evaluating proposals, a preferred company will be selected, with the final contract expected to be negotiated and awarded later in 2025. A fairness monitor will oversee the procurement process to ensure transparency and accountability.
