Kamilah Joseph, RN, BScN, is a dedicated staff member at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, whose path to healthcare was shaped by a deep desire to make a difference. Initially aspiring to become a pediatrician, Kamilah pursued a Bachelor of Science degree before discovering her passion for nursing. "I realized I valued direct patient interaction, which nursing provided," Kamilah says. This shift allowed her to apply her knowledge in a hands-on way, directly impacting patient care and making her role at Stevenson all the more fulfilling.

Kamilah chose Stevenson for its leadership opportunities and its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. “I have never let challenges deter my growth," she says. “I remain committed to continuous learning and refining my skills to provide the highest quality care with confidence." Throughout her career, she has faced and overcome obstacles, including racial biases, which only fueled her resolve to excel in her field.

In her role, Kamilah uses both her personal and professional experiences to improve patient care and workplace culture. "Applying my experiences to make a real difference in patient care is incredibly fulfilling," she shares. "Seeing positive changes is what makes my work here at Stevenson so rewarding." Her ability to connect with patients and colleagues stems from her cultural background, “My cultural background has allowed me to foster connections as I treat patients and colleagues like family, offering support in small but meaningful ways; whether dancing with a patient to encourage mobility or providing comfort to a colleague.”

For Kamilah, diversity is a strength that enriches patient care. "Recognizing patients’ cultural needs improves their experiences and health outcomes, while an inclusive workforce fosters a supportive environment for all," she says. Her experience is a testament to the power of representation in healthcare.“Physicians like Dr. Atiemo Kessie and Dr. Samia Ali have guided me through medical knowledge and racial challenges.” Kamilah reflects.
Her parents, an interior designer and a chemical engineer, instilled in her the values of excellence and resilience, qualities that are evident in her approach to nursing. "Black healthcare professionals are highly skilled and deeply passionate about patient care," Kamilah says. "Despite challenges, we remain dedicated to providing excellent healthcare for all."

When asked about work-life balance, Kamilah emphasizes the importance of self-care. “My time off is spent with my daughter, who reminds me to cherish life outside of work.” It is this balance that helps her maintain resilience in her demanding role.

Kamilah's advice to young Black Canadians in healthcare is both powerful and encouraging: "Pursue your passion fearlessly. Representation builds trust and ensures culturally competent care. Your presence in healthcare can make a significant impact."

Through her dedication, leadership, and compassion, Kamilah Joseph exemplifies the heart of nursing at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, creating a positive impact on both her colleagues and the patients she cares for every day.
